MUTUALLY RESPONSIBLE
I was almost waiting for this day to come, it’s barely been a year since the divorce and my ex wife has filed for personal bankruptcy, which squarely puts the responsibility of all the debt we accrued during our marriage on my shoulders. We had agreed to be mutually responsible in paying the debt until it was gone, but we didn’t sign any kind of contract or anything. I’ve since gotten a better job, and I was actually getting ready to tell her that I would be willing to contribute a little extra each month so we could get this monkey off of our backs as fast as possible, but I guess she decided that she was tired of paying for any of it at all. Now I’m pretty much out of luck, I make too much money to file for bankruptcy myself but paying this bill off without any help is going to put a serious damper on my personal life. I guess I should have consulted the divorce lawyer about our financial agreement instead of just trying to handle it on my own, maybe if there were some kind of legal contract in place and she still filed I’d only be responsible for half. Now it’s my word against hers and she’s denying ever having said that she would contribute anything. So now my marriage is over and, at least for the near future, so is my social life.
